as a general rule. Its useful for those to whom art and beauty are mere consumable goods rather than elusive and lofty goals. If you don't know a Vermeer from a Blake, but enjoy discussing the elegant design of your recent and impressively branded purchase, then perhaps the current mag is of some use.
All of those lifestyle mags (and the worthless satellite channels they seem to have now spawned) should just be called "might we suggest?" As in "the voluminous market data occassioned by your [car] purchase allows us to charge massive "placement fees" from makers of seemingly unrelated but actually carefully market researced products. With this in mind, might we suggest the following? Operators are standing by"
I for one am fairly sure that don't need any advice on culture from someone with a vested interest in my continued patronage of one brand name or the other.
I would expect this sort of thing from the "just add money" school of manufactured taste, best exemplified these days by BMW and MB. Actually, I'm sure those brands have even more vacuous and glossy periodicals with which to manipulate their customers' aspirations.
