its all about the inspiration. If your work is inspired by the a set of problems and designed around given market and functional parameters, it is design. If it is inspired by the need to express something... (ah, there's the rub! what word or phrase fits here?), it is art. Obviously, the two are related.

I would fully agree that one misses out on tremendous beauty by limiting the definition of art to a particular era or discipline, or in any way excluding modern works, including photographs, collages, and juxtapositions of finished works. The issue is always the true nature of the inspiration or intent, and the extent to which it is communicated.

I'm not trying to denigrate design in any way, as some of you seem to think. I simply mean that design is not art. Design is motivated by different humand needs and is in fact appreciated in a whole different way than art. What I started by denigrating was the modern tendency toward lifestyle badging, a vile process that requires designers. This is not to say that designers generally are evil, useless or anything less than valuable.

Broadly, this is not altogether different from the distinction from science on the one hand and technology on the other. If you can simply write a paragraph logically using the following words after having this far in this thread, you know what I mean:
