I went back to school for my PhD in Mechanical Engineering after working for a couple of years. I have found it to be more satisfyng than working for a large company. My undergrad is in ME. I would suggest that you do some research on schools and try to get into the school that has the highest standards (ie. higher ranking). Though I do not always believe the nonsense over 1 verses 2, a school ranked in the top twenty will challenge you and give you more a sense of achievement (also looks better for future employers). Contact faculty and see if there are any research positons open. Currently, I am at UCSD and have finished my first two years. Best decision I have ever made.
PS - Read your previous posts, and I am shocked - SHOCKED - that you consider the people in SW morons. You must have lived in Orchard Hill and stayed in studying on Fridays! Just kidding. Use to live in coolidge. Should have seen it when James was an all male dorm (and I have heard stories from other umies in the seventies, that was crazy!)
