I went to get my MBA when I was 26 -- right after getting married and before kids. In getting the MBA it makes sense to get about 5 years of experience under your belt if you plan to go to a Top 20 business school. Schools simply won't accept candidates without at least 3 years of experience unless they were academic Gods from the ivy league. Getting the experience before the degree is good because like you state you can figure out what is valuable to learn.
The MBA was well worth it -- completely changed my way of thinking which is what a good program will do. I am much more cynical and analytical now. Also filled in all the gaps that I had and helped me build a solid network of like minded people. We had a few people that had children while attending the program which I couldn't imagine doing.
