Age 24 I entered University of Michigan Ann Arbor in Econcomics and Japanese Language for an MA as an unfulfilled, relatively low payed but generally idealistic and party-happy youth. Finished in December 1999 so I still had decent jobs to choose from just before the first massive decline in the stock market as a hardened worker who hated the idea of any more friggin' research, writing, studying, and grad school politics dealing old man of 27. But, in the end, this has helped lead to a noticeable increase in my general fulfilment, both in life and salary. I received a tuition waiver to attend (due to the Japanese stuff) but still had to pay for my living expenses. I would consider the grad school route as really worth while provided that 1) you are truly aware of the amount of work and pain and misery involved in sacrificing most all other aspects of your life while in school for a hard degree [such as Math, Hist, Language, Econ, etc] as opposed to a more soft degere [such as an MBA] & 2) you are pretty certain that at the end of it all there is new way of being that you can actually fit your post-grad school self into. If you can answer yes to both of these then you will probably find a way to overcome the financial side of attending grad school and will likely be an excellent candidate.

PS
The basic teaching assistant route as someone mentioned is definitely another way to lower costs and can generally be done without really THAT much time consumption as it is mostly just a grading of undergraduate 101 level tests/papers, meaning that you don't really have to sacrifice much of your own classes. These days, even a very simple, low level TA position is likely to get you totally free tuition. A higher level TA may get you just enough to eke out an exisitence on but the time commitment makes it such that it eats too heavily into your normal class work load. In other words, finishing grad school as soon as is absolutely humanly possible is the way to go, so that you make sure that your chances of finishing are that much higher. Incurring a little loan here and there to do this (such as would be the case with a low level TAship that only gave you free tuition) is the way to go.
