School is *very* good in particular in bad economic times like these. I was a perpetual student for most of my 20's and thru my late 30's, as was my wife.
The key is what you want to do with your life? And, do you want to limit yourself and specialize, or learn new skills? Do you see yourself as an economics / financial analyst or at some point you can say the hell with it and go write Java code for a living?
You mentioned a BS in Economics, and going for a post BS in Math. If this means an MS degree, it may not be much help. many Math things require a doctorate for serious 'I am a Math Type' work. For enrichment and new skills, perhaps. If there is a program on 'applied math' or 'financial math' at the MS degree, that may be more of a choice.
Given how screwed up the job market is, a math degree by itself may not be an answer. There's tons of math majors writing Visual C++ code now and a few that do actual math related work. If you want to stick to economics and learn more math on the side, a grad program in economics may be of more help, especially with a generous helping of math classes.
Bottom line is that a specialized / grad degree (more specialized education) often limits your choices for work down the road. You may also find that a degree may not help advance you at your current position.
If you can do the degree at night and stay employed that would be best. I've done it, it's not fun, not at 35 with two young children and full time work... If this does not work, and you can secure an assistantship, that may be the other alternative.
