please correct me if I am speaking out of line, but you have NO idea what you're talking about when it comes to the whole design/art topic.
Products of today are most certainly art. Without a doubt. Some art not though. Many of todays products sell simply because they have the cosmetic appeal that grab people's attention and make them want to continue to enjoy the visual elements in their own homes. This goes with products, cars, even furniture. I know several peices of furniture especially that are hands down ART. Heck, they're not even comfortable. The Barcelona chair for example. But that doesn't stop the thousands of people buying the peice of furniture to enjoy it's timeless beauty in their own homes. Form follows function, but not always. Many many designers think that form is above more important than function, which further emphasizes my point.
No designer that I know of is simply an artistic talent. Being a designer is probably the closest field to engineering I know of. In fact, I just got back from the shop, and spent around 4 hours making one of my peices of art within 1 one thousandth of an inch of the requirements. 90% of all of the aspiring designers I know have an almost equal grasp of how things work compared to engineers in similar fields.
Please spend some time in a design studio, machine shop, and an art studio before you comment on the matter again.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but you will never be able to see it.
