Congrats! I love kittens and cats. Mine is 18yo and, unfortunately, soon on his way out of this world. Be sure to play with you kitty alot, that way you can teach it some manners! I love cats but I don't like unruly ones. ;)
Here are some fun toys you can make yourself:
1 long piece of twine with some knots in it.
1 long piece of twine with a feather or two tied to the end.
1 big peacock feather (you can get them at the craft store for really cheap)
If you can sew you can fill a little pillow shaped thing full of catnip. Part of an old sock works good for this.
My late cat liked to play with my magnetic marbles and little plastic dinosaurs and other little cheap people toys.
Treats + stuff:
You can buy like a pound of "wheatberries" and barley and oats for about a dollar each. You can sprout the seeds and kitty loves to eat the grass. Its way cheaper than the $3+ "kittygrass" at the stores.
You can grow your own catnip too.
You can buy chicken livers for less and $1 and bake them. Cats LOVE this, but its kinda gross and can stink up the house.
Kitties can be frustrating sometimes, but just be patient and positive and you'll have an awesome cat for a long time.
I like the silica gel litter, but its pricy and probably not environmentally friendly. You might want to put a tray or one of those plastic floor mats (a la home depot) around the litter box to keep the cat from tracking litter all over. Keep the box clean.
Have fun with the little fuzzball! :)
