They'll provide your cat with care equal in quality to that a city vet will and the price will be 1/2 to 1/3 as much. This depends on your personality though - some people don't flich at treating a cat for leukemia - other people I've met talk about $5000 hip displasyia surgery for their dog. People set different priorities.

Cats aren't born with instincts to the same extent that dogs are - I believe its a genetic difference (recent Atlantic Monthly article as I recall)... Anyway the point is within the interval of socialization you can train a cat to behave in any way you choose - like a dog, like a parakeet, flushing the toilet - you name it. They don't instinctlively know themselves to be cats like dogs KNOW they're dogs: lifting the leg to mark a tree, bowing down to initiate play, ears back to tell you they're mad - these are all instinctual reflexes in dogs - cats arn't made that way - their mother teaches them what it is to be a cat when they're kittens. (this is a rough recollection of an article I read maybe 1.5 years ago)

All this to say, you've got to do a good job with the cat or you'll really screw it up. You can neglect a dog and then with training modify its behavior but cats really need kind stimulation (ie love) at a young age. I recall that researchers in this study (mentioned in the Atlantic) allowed some cats to age without human contact through this period - they were afterwards completely feral - they couldn't be domesticated.

our "twitchy" was a nice cat - he really loved the laser pointer.
