Our Siamese was obsessive about clawing, despite efforts to train, so out came the critters front claws. Surprisingly the furry beast can still climb up a tree or scale a 6' wood fence. The declaw did make his life miserable for a few days, but he was on painkillers. Clawing is one way a cat marks it's territory, vet claimed that cats do pretty well defending themselves with rear claws only.
Wife has asthma and cat allergy, so she says cat has to go. Kids and I say cat stays, but it gets a bath once a week for dander control, seems to be working, and the cat has gotten used to it.
After several cats, we provide only dry food and table scraps to this beast. This keeps the cat from becoming fussy about what it eats, and quality dry food is supposed to better for the animal.
