I'm a native Oregonian, and grew up outside west portland. In my humble opinion (and I've never been to Vermont, so this is one sided I suppose), Oregon is an awesome state. For some reason Oregon is famous for rainy weather but to be honest seattle is far more dreary and overcast. Summers here are beatiful, the coast is only a 1.5 hour drive, and Mt. Hood is only about 2 hours away. From BrianD's report of Vermont, it sounds like Oregon bears a lot of similarities, with the exception of saabers. Without doubt, there are probably a lot more saabing folks and saab mechanics in the northeast. As a DIYer I find no real problem with not a whole lot of mechanics being around, and as for not many oregonians driving saabs, well, there are out there, but I prefer having a unique car.
Anyways, Oregon is a great state, and if you chose to go to move to vermont, I still highly suggest checking out oregon at some point. We have a lot to offer.
good luck!
