Portland is nicely situated about an hour or so West of Mt Hood (almost 12K ft tall). It's sbout the same distance to the rugged and majestic Oregon Coast.(The farther south you go on HWY 101 the views are awsome on high coastal cliffs to California which is my favorite part). Portland is split by a river with the West Hills rising up and to the E and NE you see great views of Cascade range, MT Hood and MT St Helens most commonly. Portland is a good size city but still has a charming small town feeling that doesn't exist in Seattle. There are really cool neighborhoods to hang out in and lots of cool bars and coffee houses and bookstores and a great music an dart scene.
The climate is very moderate so you usually need to go the the mountains to get snow. It has gotten warmer in recent years. Unusual to get below freezing for very long. We are lucky to get a coupel of inches of the white stuff that melts off too quickly. Summers it will be 90s or 100 for a couple of weeks. The rain is not as common as in the past and we have had a lot of sun in recent years but clouds will take over from time to time. Get a place with good southern exposure).
This area is so great for hiking, sandy beaches, huge forests, waterfalls, green lush plants from the rain that we do get.
I tried living in California and Washington and came bact to Oregon. The only thing that I don't like is the Communist politics. I'm a Libertarian(Socially tolerant, Fiscally conservative). Some in goverment want to tax us into oblivian.
I havn't been to the Northeast of the US but hear they have much harder winters and more humid summers. The humidity is very little out here.
I want to live here the rest of my life and I think that you would find it one hell of an adventure. I do every time we go camping.
Also there is an awsome Saab shop in Tigard near Portland called T-Scandia. I can't recommend them enough.
I'd roll the dice on P-Town, you wont be sorry.
Cheers, KB.
