I just did 2 bathrooms, and my kitchen is going to be done in May. The biggest home improvement lessons I've learned are:

Time is your biggest enemy and
Have all materials at hand when you begin the job.

It sucks wasting 2 hours of driving / shopping / checkout lines at home depot or lowes for 1 lousy plumbing fitting.

I got 2 quotes for about $3000 - $3500 for granite slabs in my kitchen. After looking around and talking to folks, we've decided to use 12"x12" granite tile at $10/sq ft. They will bullnose the edge for $8/ft. This will be FAR cheaper than a slab, plus I can make a nice wall or big backsplash of granite and decorative tiles. The only downside is the grout, but that's not a huge deal.

I just did a vanity with 1" square culture stone tiles, and it looks NICE. The tile shop guys have to love me: 2 bathroom floors, 1 vanity, and soon a kitchen counter.
