I moved from San Jose to Austin about four five years ago. I have been happy with the choice so far.
Traffic isn’t too bad when compared to the Bay Area, but it does back up on the two major highways during rush hour. You can’t be the nightlife – Depending on your age, Austin has “6th Street” which has more clubs and bars in a condensed area then I have ever seen in my life. This area is geared more towards the 80,000+ college kids in the area (UT Austin, Texas State, and a few small private schools). For a more “subdued” atmosphere there is “4th Street” which has a few clubs/bars geared towards the older crowd.
Cost of living (in particular housing) is about half that of the Bay Area. Median home price in Austin is about $150,000. I think when I left San Jose was at $520,000. Gas (premium) is at $1.92ish. No state income tax. HUGE property tax though. It’s hot and humid compared with the Bay Area. The difference I noticed most is it doesn’t cool off here at night like it did in San Jose.
Food is OK. Great BBQ, Tex-mex, not so great pizza and Chinese. Compared to San Jose it is probably on par – compared with San Francisco you will find the restaurant selection lacking.
Crime seems to be pretty low, though for whatever reason they have had a rash (26 so far this year) of bank robberies in Austin. None have been violent though.
Good luck with your choice!
