I grew up in Austin as a baby through high school. (I was jsut there for a week last wekk actually!) It's nice. It's a pretty low key place, actually. I mean it is great for living--if you can handle the humidity--and it is cheaper than you are used to in the Bay Area. But, you know, Austin is fairly lacking in the culture department. I mean, don't get me wrong, it has some decent and sortof original culture, but it is the culture of the slow burn and the repetitive. If you're looking for that intriguing mix of high/low/old/now/earnest/ironic offered in NY, LA, Chicago, SF then you're not going to find it here. And Austin is suprisingly lacking in food, architecture, shopping, and even evening activities (outside of beer bars and been-there-heard-that-a-million-times live music.) However, it IS one of the country's easiest places to live and people are generally friendly, fair and sort-of progressive. So if that is what you are ultimately looking for then Austin is a slam dunk. Good luck!
PS. Expect to pay 250k and up for a 3bdr/2ba you'd actually be interested in living in. And be careful, there are a ton of shoddy homes built in Austin by rather crooked contractors in the 1970s and 80s. Check this all out carefully, as well as the mold issues.
