The document fee is collusion... Posted by Misplacedyankee [Email] (#1756) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Misplacedyankee) on Fri, 25 Jun 2004 08:00:55 In Reply to: It taught me alot..., James D, Fri, 25 Jun 2004 06:08:39 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
That documentation fee is collusion amongst dealers if you ask me...now many make that number an "irremovable" number stamped on the form. In Dallas its almost always $75. In NJ I found that it varies, but usually $100 to $175. I just learned the amount they are going to hit me with for all fees upfront when negotiating my price and consider them all in my offer. Some of that does cover their overhead to pay the finance guy and someone who does the paperwork etc. The one that I think is really bogus is the "advertising" charge BS or "Dealer Prep". Those costs are their problems, not mine, all tactics those to give you a better precieved deal while covering their overhead. The alternative to all this is collusion in the other direction where all dealers charge you none of those fees, but always sell over invoice to cover costs. Lets face it, whether we like it or not, dealers make good money. The are part of the supply chain and need to be compensated. Same thing happens with the food you buy and anything else in life - the only good thing here is that we can at least negotiate the amount we pay them for their service.
At the end of the day its a balance. Many of us who are more informed get a good deal. There are far more less informed that don't get a good deal. It all balances out in their business. Is that taking advantage of people - I don't know - c'est la vie. Dealers are no different in their tactics than most business (like credit card lenders for example) that hide stuff in fine print etc. Dealers just get a very bad public image about it. Its always good to inform and question every "deal" in life. If you have done that well you should sleep well at night knowing you did the best you could. Thats what I do.
