Like I said the opposite of that is the fact that McDonalds is charging you $1.29 for a $.10 burger and burying all sorts of costs and profit in that price. Its all a matter of product packaging. I don't think either one is being more honest than the other with the consumer. I think dealers were forced to come up with the BS fees and packaging to protect their margin on selling cars in a sales environment where people know the dealers invoice, holdback, rebates, etc.
What is really the difference between a burger joint jacking up the price or removing the tomato from the burger to protect margin and what the dealer is doing to protect margin? The dealer knows he still needs to make money on the guy that he sells to at or below invoice and this is his way of packaging that deal. Saturn and Carmax have taken the no haggle approach and package the fees differently and you pay more because they are taking the whole balance into the mix (those that can strike a deal and those that can't). Its all just marketing....thats why it doesn't bother me. As long as I know the total cost I can make an informed decision and it is my duty to shop around.
Before I go to the dealer I ask him to fax me a sheet with every single fee down to the last penny and sign his name and his sales managers name next to it. I actuall raise the question if a doc fee was missing on his sheet. They will do this or they won't.
