I just returned from 3 weeks in Germany, where one's car is loved as much if not more than here. Agreeably, it is a more densely populated country, but I saw many folks loading bikes onto and off of trains, streetcars, busses and the like. Their cars, when used, are for longer trips with a large group of folks present.
Prices for mid range gas were $5.50 per US gallon, and the federal sales tax on non-food puchases is 16%. Compared to my trip there in '99, I don't think I saw anyone going over about 160kph (100mph) and there were farms of wind generators in many areas.
Perhaps we could spend more of our federal tax buck$ to aid in more mass transit and less depenence on fossil files for electricity.
I'll still ride my bike for saving gas, for my health, both physical and emotional, and save my fun Saabing for needed trips and the winter.
To link this to another thread I don't want to get involved in, perhaps Michael Moore needs to do "Roger and me, II" about our energy policies.
