I loved working right in town for two years, but the pay was lousy & the work unsatisfying. But, I rode my bike to work & errands year round, & only put 4k mi/yr on my '90 C900 for two years!
No, I've not yet been able to afford a Rivendell. :-( Of the two working bikes I have, one's a '92 KHS Montaña Comp fully rigid mtn bike that's been converted to messy-weather Urban Assault Vehicle (two rings in front, street tires for non-snow seasons, fenders, rack, lights, FlexStem, etc.). I ride this one when they're predicting afternoon rains.
The other is a beautiful Hans Schneider road bike, made with Columbus Nivacrome steel tubing & silver brazed into Henry James lugs. Hans only makes custom bikes in Huntsville, TX. I bought mine used, so it's not made specifically for me, but the fit was close enough that I could dial it in with the correct stem & seatpost. The ride is awesome, & the thin, strong steel does a fantastic job of damping road harshness. This is the bike I prefer to commute on. Unfortunately, it's a "racing" design & won't fit fenders, & I don't like getting road slime all over me & the bike. ("Road slime" consists of dirt, grit, oil, & rubber that all washes over to the side of the road; it's not worth the time & trouble to de-slime after every rainy ride.)
I like Waterford frames, too. They use the smartly-designed & not-too-ornate Henry James lugs. I love the style of these lugs, & Waterford offers a polished stainless HJ lug option or the new Kirk Pacenti SS lugs in a custom, hand-carved option.
