i lived in kirkland (eastside) and worked in downtown at pier 36 for 3.5 years. it was about 18 miles by bike, but the area is extremely bike friendly. very few of the miles were actually on the roads with the cars, most was on specific paved bike paths where i could drop down into the aero bars and crank along at 17-18 mph. my best time (with gear and clothes in bag) was 1h 4min. just about an 18mph avg. i used to do it a few times a week. by the time you get home in the evening, you don't feel the need to workout cause you are all done (2 + hours already). plus, it was great training for the seattle to portland (stp) ride. i logged 1200+ miles training that year before the stp and felt great during the ride.
now, sad to say, i live just south of boston and commute to mansfield (halfway between providence and boston) and the area is none too bike friendly (people and terrain alike). so i have done practically no riding. but i think i can do a mix like you mentioned (drive partway and bike the balance to work). my commute is now 28 miles each way and it's much longer to stay off highways. would be 30+ by bike. there must be a way....
