There are plenty of bed and breakfast places inside and slightly off Monterey and Carmel as well if you like B&Bs. I don't know how you two feel about Bread & Breakfast places. Some people like them some don't. I like the home atmosphere of a B&B but at the same time, I don't like it because it makes me feel like I am in someone else's home. I actually prefer more of a commercial setting, i.e. a more conventional hotel. Just call the hotel and make sure they accept whatever payment method you intend to use.
If you can't drive, you may have a bit of a problem in California. However, you may consider **FLYING** directly into Monterey. Yes, there is an airport right in Monterey but you may have to fly into San Francisco instead of San Jose. The airport is also close to Laguna Sega raceway as well 8-). I hope you don't mind flying smaller planes, if you are lucky you might be flying in a SAAB 8-). American Eagle probably still have frequent flights from SFO to Monterey and Los Angeles. United used to have one flight a day into and out of Monterey in a bigger plane (a 737). You can be picked up by a shuttle or call a cab to go to your hotel. Call up the hotel you are interested in and see if they can arrange for a pickup.
However, if you don't intend to go far in Monterey/Carmel, I would suggest you stay in a hotel right in Monterey or Carmel. I like the Monterey Plaza Hotel but there are plenty of good hotels in the area. It is close to most tourist attractions in Monterey, including the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
Another suggestion is that you book a few days in a hotel in downtown Monterey, then another in Carmel for the rest. Go rent some good bikes and you can go to a lot of places around the area. Roads can be quite hilly depending where you go.
Get a AAA tour book and use that as a guide to surf the net to gather more information.
That part of the country is still my favorite, the other places I would recommend would be Colorado and New Mexico in the mountains. The beaches are too cold to swim, so you won't get the beach crowd even in the summer time. You would see wind surfers and hang gliders however.
However, don't go there during winter time, it's the rainy season for California !
Congratulations and happy planning !
