. . . I travel with the robotics team at my school every spring to San Jose. Sometmies it works out that flying into San Francisco International is a better deal that flying into San Jose and is not that much farther from Monterey / Carmel.
Check in advance to see if an additional deposit will get you into a car as "underage" renters.
Other sites nearby I've enjoyed are the boardwalk in Santa Cruz, the Redwood forest there just out of town, defnitely kayaking in Monterey, a fun drive in a fun car if you get one up to the observatory outside San Jose, NASA Ames Research facility, walking the 17 mile drive at Pebble Beach.
Ok that's about 4 cents' worth, but hopefully you have more options. Have fun!
