Carmel is very nice. Not a night life town but perfect for the romance of a honeymoon.

I lived in No. Ca. for 8 years and loved the area your visiting.
Get a convertible, trust me with the sight and scenery around the panaramic view will be worth it. 1st thing to do is the "17 Mile drive" in Carmel.

Really close to Carmel is Monterey, home is great scenery, eats and a world class aquarium. North of Carmel is Santa Cruz and Pacifica which offer great exploring and San Francisco is not far away either.

San Francisco is supposed to be one of the most romantic cities in the world. If you stay in SF get a hotel and park your car, you don't need to drive. Cabs and cable cars will get you around w/o the major frustions of driving/parking.

I suggest that you do a mini-tour of the coast. South of Carmel is Hearst Castle and well worth a half day trip. Another poster talked about Big Sur which is a groovy town and a great drive from Carmel.

If your into nature a lot then you may consider spending a little more time and split your trip in half. Start in Carmel and then head up to the Redwood National forests (about 275 miles North of Carmel and the drive up the coast is gold). You'll want to stay a night or two in the area. In the National parks (yes plural) you'll see trees that are taller than the Empire State building. Extremely spiritual! If you want to get close to God its amazing. A honeymoon picnic in that setting will bring smiles for the rest of your life.
