So Bob is on track financially, mortgage on way to being gone soon, and probably has a few (funny looking, colorful) dollars in the bank. His taste for cougars aside, he has a very good head on this shoulders. A fun purchase every now and then wouldn't mean the end financially.

The key is to be able to afford what you can buy. So Bob's paycheck is a bit bigger than in the past. As long as it covers the main stuff (mortgage, car, car insurance, food, and putting at least 10% away for retirement), enjoy some of the extra. Bob could buy a cottage up north this year, a big screen TV in a few years, whatever.

My rule for stereo gear (and it's worth as much as many new cars) is always buy for cash. Too many friends swim in high-interest credit card debt, which can lead to the downward spiral towards bankrupcy. Bob just needs to save his loonies and Candian Tire bucks and buy that toy. Also, saving up for a few months gives Bob time to think about the purchase. It's no longer an impusle item, it's a well researched purchase considering value, features, and benefits.

Just don't blow it all at the Mirage.

Sounds like Bob took the story about the millionaire barber too seriously.

From what I hear, Bob's focus will REALLY change if kids come into the picture. Now all that $$$ will be for diapers, clothes, toys, and day care. Then there's pressure to save for college... Bottom line, buy all the cool toys before you're married, and then get some more before kids. You'll be old and grey before you get another really cool toy.

Cheers,
Randy
