I think both platforms are about equal as for the end results. On the PC side you can have a Canopus acquisition card. As for the software, there is many of them.
But I have to admit, I am a Mac fan. As for the software you have the choice between Final cut pro, Final cut express and the award winning imovie. I've tried the two first but there are complicated but imovie is sooo easy and give excellent results.
With the Mac, I had no hassle at all. As soon you plug your camcorder to the firewire port, the software see it. imovie will extract all the scene for you. Great tools and effects too. Did many films with it. Recently had a problem, imovie was sluggish, movie too long? too many effects? Had to restart my old 533 mhz G4 and things were ok after that.
