I need some SaabNet advise here. I'm currently using a 3 year old 1GHz Athlon with 768MB, WinXP Pro and Pinnacle Studio 8 to edit videos from my MiniDV camcorder. However, it's a little slow... After completion of editing it took over 3 hours to just render a 19 minute movie! So, I have been thinking about getting a new system for doing video editing.

Well, the first thing that comes to mind is a Mac. So I looked at the new iMac G5 and the Dual 1.8 PowerMac. I was not able to get any really good feel for how much more performance the PM would get me, so I actually brought my camcorder to an Apple store and created the same 12 minute movie on each of the machines (both had 512MB). Bottom line, the PM was ~25% faster than the iMac. This was a simple movie (only 6 dissolve transitions). The folks at the Apple store assured me that with more complex editing (e.g. more transitions, color correction, etc.) the PM would widen the performance gap.

So, just as I was ready to plunk down the cash for a PM, a friend said "Hey, you use a PC now for video editing, why not just buy a Dell for half the cost of the Mac?" So, here my SaabNet friends here are the questions

Has anyone used a modern Windows platform (e.g. 3+ GHz P4, 1GB, WinXP) to do video editing? If so, what are your experiences?

Does anyone have any compelling reasons why I should get the Pm over the iMac other than I trade the ~25% performance and expandability of the PM for the 20" screen on the iMac?

Thanks for reading and for any thoughts....
