I can only second Ken's observations about the difference in "generations" of Jaguar drivers. The "S-type" Jaguar platform, if I'm not mistaken, has a Ford Mondeo platform. The "S-type" is nothing more than a marketing adventure by Ford to expand sales; there seems to be little "Jaguar" in the S-type. And as is so often the case with persons whose need to profile themselves in "luxury items" is greater than their sense of self-dignity, this type of "dumbed down" status product ends up being scoffed up by an entirely new group of buyers. My personal observations seem to say that this is not so much the case with the new "X-type". I believe the new X-type was introduced after (well after) the S-type, and that Jaguar seems to have tried to fight back a bit at the obvious cheapening of clientele (and public perception) by making the X-type a bit more in line with Jag's heritage of character and purpose in automobile production.
