Regarding the running engine: a well running engine will indeed have it's only sparks contained within the cylinders and the electrical distribution box. But remember looking under the hood at your old 900's dried out plug wires in damp weather? This on its own would not cause an explosion as you drive up. But if you left the car running, filling it or not, while the truck on the other side of the pump was filling their 100 litres without attendace. (and likely the nozzle just barely hanging in the filler tube, about to fall out and spray liquid gas all over the place) Maybe...
Regarding the cellphone: I liken the cellphone battery exploding and happening to blow up the reasonably safe gas station to getting struck by lightning playing golf on a clear sunny day. You must've had it coming.
