I awoke yesterday to find 2-inches of fresh cold and blowing snow on the ground. I left home at 5am for a 45 mile commute on roads that had not yet been plowed, salted, or sanded. Because of the cold temps the snow initially placed an ice layer on the roadways before building to the 2-inch thickness. My trusty Saab steed equipped with 4 snow tires got me to my work destination in slightly over an hour. Part of the time I was slowed to only 25mph, but other times I was able to exceed 60mph on the ice and snow covered expressways.
My youngest son moved to Raleigh, NC this past summer to start his first job. While at work yesterday snow flakes began to fall ouside, and co-workers started to disappear. By 3:30pm he noticed how few folks were still at work, the rest having left early due to the snow, and he thought maybe they know something he didn't. Total snowfall for the day was less than one-inch with the tops of the grass blades still poking through the fluffy white stuff on the ground.
His normal 45 minute commute time for the 20 mile drive to his condo turned into a 5 hour ordeal! No accidents, no spin-outs, no closed roads, just the very congested roadways of a rapidly growing city filled with individuals having no idea how to drive in with snow on the roads. Everyone was doing less than 5mph! After growing up in Michigan, and then spending 4 years in upstate New York, he was flabergasted! Thankfully he can tele-commute from home so he didn't have to drive at all today.
He had heard things got bad on the roads around that part of North Carolina when a little bit of snow fell. He had no idea just how bad they really become. Maybe that is the price to pay for living in an area that enjoys such nice weather for most of the year, small hic-cups in weather patterns become major issues.
In addition, his dog's bladder couldn't withstand the enormous delay of my son's arrival home - that must have been nice to find too.
