Consumer Reports tested 47 models of upright and cannister vacuums,
as reported in the January 2005 issue. In the uprights, the Hoover Wind tunnel, Self Propelled ($300) took top honors, but the Eureka Boss Smart ($140) placed second and was named Best Buy. The expensive Kirby placed 5th and the Dyson came in at 13th. Years ago we inherited a Kirby from my in-laws, for which they paid $1600 for the vacuum and accessory package. It failed shortly after, and we took it to our local vacuum store, where the manager pointed to a line-up of similar defunct Kirbys. We bought a Sharp upright vacuum, which is still giving outstanding service after over 10 years. The Sharp vacuum wasn't rated in this article. Given the price, the Eureka Boss Smart seems worth checking out.
