I would suggest browsing your local jewelers and designers, as other people have suggested. Be aware that you can haggle at bit, like you can for cars. I talked a "mall" jeweler down about $300 on a strand of pearls once.
Mr. Saabgirlie and I had a rather untraditional engagement. I basically proposed to him and we went shopping for a ring together. Some think that this gauche, but whatever. I wanted something unique and so we went to a local jeweler that does rather modern custom stuff. My husband affectionately refers to my ring as "the machine part". Its a 1 carat princess in a brushed platinum tension setting. Because the platinum band is so thick and there are diamonds under the main stone, I didn't get an additional wedding band. I didn't have a certain "carat" requirement and it was funny because when I picked out the design and whatnot Mr. Saabgirlie seemed disappointed that I didn't want a bigger stone. A bigger stone would have looked ridiculous in the design.
He won't wear jewelry so his wedding ring is a pewter dragon ring from the renfest. $30. He picked that one out himself. It matched the dragons on my dress.
Considering we broke just about every other tradition, it is odd that I decided to go with the diamond engagement ring idea, but I love my ring. I also love my SAAB. And I love Mr. Saabgirlie, of course. ;)
