See what her peers and family have for rings if they are married. No sense to buy a monster ring if all the married women she knows have 1/2 carat rings. She wouldn't fit in! (not that that is important, nor is keeping up with the Jones's) In such a case, 3/4 to 1 carat should be fine.
If you live in a rural area, probably smaller rings are more common. In an upscale urban area, I suspect bigger rings are more common. On our honeymoon, we went to Atlantis in the Bahamas, and the other couples had true monster rings, as that tends to be a more affluent place to visit than the people in my normal circles tend to visit. We haven't seen such big diamonds since.
Also be careful sharing the fact that you are buying a ring. I bought an engagement ring with the help of my sister and my brother's girlfriend four years ago. The women were very helpful but 60 people knew my girlfriend (now wife) would shortly be engaged before she did. I had to give it to her that Saturday because if I waited another day, family dinner and church socializing could have really watered down the elements of suprise. This is a faster spreading topic of conversation than babies.
I don't buy the 2 months income thing either.
I spent about $2000 with a local business and we have been very pleased. It has a decent sized diamond in the middle, with a band holding a couple little diamonds on each side. (the band was added later for $600ish)
