A wedding isn't a symbol?

Heck, it's all symbolic -- it's just a piece of paper (or a rock). What will be important is how to deal with another person, your own fears, aspirations, dreams, and how to merge those together. Throw in time constraints, kids, mortgages, loss of family and jobs, and marriage is very hard. Symbols such as rings and large weddings aren't going to make your marriage any better, and anyone who thinks they do should go into pre-marriage counseling. Ask anyone who's had a divorce what a difference their engagement ring or wedding made to their marriage. In my discussions with divorced people, I've never had anyone who even mentioned engagement rings (other than I saw a story about a woman who convinced men to get engaged with her, then canceled the wedding and took the engagement ring) or weddings as being any type of factor in their marriage.
That doesn't mean that you (or anyone) shouldn't enjoy their engagement ring and/or wedding. It just means people should realize that these symbols don't mean anything for a good marriage.
