...comes to computers and operating systems. If you're not doing serious video editing, OSX will probably be more than sufficient for your needs - crashes are relatively rare (I've never had one) and the ones that do occur usually only involve one of the application you're running and can be quit without shutting all the other applications that might be running. Unlike Windows, it's a real operating system that has a Unix kernel. On the hardware side, unfortunately, it's pretty similar to the PC boxes. They're all not made here anymore and more than likely come from China. The good thing is the RISC processor which is designed and built here. It's the same processor, essentially, that big blue uses in their workstations - the Power4. It's a very well designed 64-bit processor that will serve Apple well for the next 5 years, at least. I love my Powerbook, but it uses the G4 processor. Don't get caught in the processor figures that the marketeers like to throw around. RISC and CISC architecture cannot be adequately judged on solely the clock speed. There are other issues such as the quantity of instruction sets that can be fetched in a clock-cycle, etc. The point here is that there is more than clock-speed that determines how well a processor works. I love the laptop because like my 9000, it's very well designed and does everything I need it to do. Are there better machines? Well, yes but not better laptops, IMHO. I'd love to have an IMac with the G5 processor, which is about half the price my laptop is. And, I dare anyone to name a better $499 deal than the MacMini. With products like this and the iPod, Apple should continue having product earnings graphs like below.....
