can afford clusters. Us mortals have to make do with single or dual processor systems running consumer applications, where Macs haven't been shown to be faster.
Seriously though, even though I think using FLOPS to compare desktop systems doesn't reflect real world performance accurately (what about bandwidth for example?), the stated figures sound way off. If we are to compare raw processing power using synthetic benchmarking, the SPECint&SPECfp2000 (same benchmark used by Apple during G5 launch) results show for example the Athlon64 FX-55 to have a score of 1854/1782. The G5 2.2 Ghz scores 1040/1241 and the very inexpensive 2.0 Ghz Athlon64 3200+ scores 1335/1250. I couldn't find results for the 2.5 Ghz G5, but it's not likely to be much higher.
As for the price on hardware, I don't know about the states but at least here it's impossible to buy a G5 Powermac for the same money, with the same specifications, as a well decked out PC. If you buy components and assemble them yourself there's no comparison in price or flexibility.
Again, Macs are nice and smooth, but they just can't do what I need from a computer and are too expensive for my taste. But I can definitely see the attraction.
Different strokes for different folks... :)
