it may depend on what you do and how you use the computer. The two key concerns for most people are system stability and file compatibility. For reference, I use a G4 PowerBook 10 hours a day, and travel internationally with it. I also have a G3 iMac (kids an wife use it) and and older G3 PowerBook (in semi-retirement). Been using Macs exclusively since 1991.
OS X is unbelievably stable. I have apps crash or lock once in a while, but never the system. I routinely shut the computer down and restart once a month, but otherwise I just put it to sleep when not using it. The shut down just seems to make it run better, but I'm not a wirehead so I don't know why. I back up to an external drive once a week.
Most of my clients are Fortune 150 companies running XP Professional. They all use MS Office and have Acrobat so files moving between us all work fine. Occasionally a server somewhere will corrupt a file, but that can happen anyway.
I can do everything I need on a Mac and I really like the ease of use. My daughters know and use Windows at school and prefer the Mac.
I look at a computer as a tool and especially being self-employed, I need stuff to work. Since I'm my own IT guy, I don't want to think about making sure the computer works correctly or taking billable time to fix system stuff. I wake it up and go to work. Plus, as others note, the virus issue goes away.
The only downside is that Macs usually cost more for equivalent performance. But I think the ease of use, reliability and stability make up for the added cost. Then there's the Mac-envy I get from more than a few Windows users who see how easy it is to use and that it just works.
Hope this helps.
Noel
