I just gave you an example. Before buying my SAAB I did a lot of research on Audi A4 and BMW 3- and 5-series wagons. I spent about 1 year doing this and talked to about 10 owners. Actual highway numbers were always at least 10% worse than real life, especially bad was Audi.
Check my link below - the highway test is done at 48 mph. The Saabs cannot use the tallest gear efficiently at this speed as it is geared rather low - will have to use 4th gear most likely. Other cars have faster spinning engines - does not matter at 48 mpg but will matter at 70 mpg.
My Supra spins at 2700 RPM at 60mph - and this is a 6-cyl engine. That is why it sucks so my gas at speed despite lower weight and better aerodynamics.
