Looks like I've ventured near one of the sacred cows of Saabnet.
My entire point, that has been missed, is that "your mileage may vary". My 9-5 gets about what the EPA says it ought to. Yours gets better. There are people here who get worse. My conclusion based on those facts is that one cannot make a blanket statement that Saabs get better mileage than other cars with similar EPA ratings.
Now let's say your conclusion that those other makes get worse real-life mileage is scientifically defensible. What's the difference, a few mpgs? Whatever it is it's hardly enough to make the claim that Saab is a leader in fuel efficient cars.
