What people don't realize is that a reduction in nominal wage is beneficial so long as every product and service in the market place goes down as well. $100 can buy exactly the same number of T-shirts at $5 each as $400 can buy at $20 each. Government restricting importation of product and labor benefits nobody except its self and its cronies: because we have a progressive tax system, where higher nominal income puts one in a higher tax bracket. Therefore, a reduction/stagnanation in nominal wages (so long as accompnied by simultaneous proportional reduction in everything we buy) is in effect a tax cut for every working man and woman.
Of course, the government and its cronies will do everything to prevent that from happening, because as any organism, its primary mission is its own growth. On whether our government will become more socialist or fascist, IMHO, it's not a matter of whether but when; all we can do is trying to slow it down a bit. As generations grow up without ever experiencing or knowledge of the nature of tyranny and hardship, people become less vigilant during prolonged peace and prosperity (wacko theories of statist common-good seeps in easily). It is no co-incidence that the majority of native-born American intellectuals of the 60's and 70's embraced socialism, wereas it was the immigrant thinkers like Ayn Rand herself having experienced tyranny overseas first hand that upheld the libertarian principles, upon which the founding fathers built this republic precisely because they too experienced tyranny first-hand.
