I wouldn't be so sure that the 1st owner takes a bigger hit than the second owner. The depreciation hit ain't *significantly* less for the second 3 years than the first 3 years. A three year old car is a desireable used car, a 6 year old used car somewhat less so. And for comparable amounts of depreciation, why not have a new one?
So you lease a new one for very little down for $XXX and pay on it for 3 years and then walk away. Or you buy a 3 year old CPO, put very little down and pay the same $XXX, but your signed up for 5 years on a purchase to makethe payment comparable to a lease on a new one, so in three years can you walk away? Likely not, likely at the 3 year slot in a 5 year loan you're lucky if you have equity, especially of you slid in with a minimum down.
