Nice bike. I just got my first road bike also, after having been a recreational mountain biker for the last 4 or 5 years. The wife and I are training for a century ride in the fall.
I ended up getting a Lemond. An '04 Buenos Aires (sweet discount on a leftover in the 61 cm size, apparently they couldn't move it), which is one of their steel/carbon fiber mix frames. Very smooth, drastically more confortable ride than the other bikes I tested. I actually liked the light weight of the aluminum Trek 2100 and Felt F60, but they were far behind in terms of comfort. The Lemond just filters out all the little bumps and vibrations.
FWIW Lemond is basically owned by Trek. The bikes are all built in the Trek factory and make extensive use of Trek's in-house component brand Bontrager. Lemond still does design, but they're not really independent anymore. Sorta like Saab I guess!
re. clipless pedals - go for it. My mountain bike had regular toe clip pedals, the Lemond has pretty standard two sided Shimano SPDs. I definitely like 'em. I also opted for MTB shoes. I ended up with Sidi Rampas, which came in around $100. My wife has a pair of Cannondale MTB shoes, they look like sneakers. Even better for walking around than my Sidis. The Sidis are a little more like road bike shoes, a pretty good compromise I think.
