When I started with the clipless road pedals, I used Look pedals, but I switched to SPDs when I added the mountain bike so that I could use one pair of shoes for both. The dedicated road pedals (Look, Time, etc.) are probably better for road cruising, but they're a little harder to get used to and the shoes are nearly impossible to walk in. I understand that Cranks are the berries for off road bikes, though I've never used them. The SPDs are probably a compromise for both bikes, but I decided that the compatability was a must for me. You can go with either a road shoe or an off-road shoe, but the off-roads are easier to walk in. I have some nice Diadoras which look like roadies on the top but aren't.
