OT: How to most efficiently run central A/C?

I am currently running my central A/C per the typical recommendation; that is while away from home during the day my programmable thermostat automatically raises the temp to 78 (can't go higher because I have a dog at home) from my typical at home temp of 72 (I know I could save money by increasing the at home temp but this is the temp that makes me comfortable).
The problem is that it takes my A/C about four hours to bring the house back down to 78 from 72. It seems that the savings that I get from maintaining the house at 78 from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. (9 hours) are being spent in the four hours it takes to cool the house back down to 72. In fact, by running the system for four straight hours it seems that the traditional method is actually costing me more money. It seems that it would actually be more energy efficient to just maintain 72 around the clock or only switch to 74 or 75 when I'm away instead of 78. Also what seems like at best marginal savings in efficency (though I'm not convinced that I'm not actually spending more money by raising the temp to 78), doesn't seem to be enough to justify the warm house I come home to.
What do you all think? Any suggestions?
