the energy use is strictly dependent on the difference in temperature between inside and outside the house. The less this difference, the less energy used. So get your a/c tuned up by a professional and buy an intelligent thermostat that senses how long the a/c takes to get to set point. Honeywell makes a good one. Then set it so it will anticipate the time it takes to get to set point and when you enter the house it will be cool. p.s. - your dog will easily tolerate a few more degrees of heat since when you are not at home it spends most of the time sleeping.
