I had the system tuned-up a few weeks ago. One vent was not sealed well (I was cooling my attic!) and I was 2.5 lbs light on freon. System is operating much better now (obviously!), but with the very warm and humid weather here on Long Island it's been putting my 14 year old system to the test.
I also have a new Honeywell thermostat with SmartResponse (automatically calculates time to bring house to tempature by time set), but I think the SmartResponse feature only works for heat not cool. In any event, if the system started to bring the house back to 72 at say 2:00 p.m. (because it takes four hours to recover), then my energy savings are dimished that much further.
I think in the next year or two it will be time to replace the system with a new, more efficient system. Freon is done next year anyway.
As to Scott's recommendation, I don't think our power company offers the type of billing you discuss to residential customers, but I'll look into it. Thanks.
