How much damage does it take to "total" a car?

I saw a '02 9-3 SE online at a local Infiniti dealership. Price seemed very cheap (under 13K for under 24K miles). I called and the first thing the guy said, once he know I was looking for the SAAB, was that it had a salvage title as it had been hid broadside and totaled by the insurance company.
According to the salesman, the dealership couldn't identify anything wrong with the car and took it in trade, only discovering it had been damaged from the title once they got it.
I once owned an '87 900T which had almost $3000 worth of damage when someone broke the passenger window and stole the factory stereo. Seemed like a lot to me at the time.
I'm wondering who little damage could it take to for an insurance company to "total" this car. Would replacing two doors one one side do it? I remember reading that a stolen power driver seat from some small Acuras would be expensive enough to total one of them several years ago. Could it be this minor?
