Earlier this year I asked for advice on this on this site because my 2000 9-3 which had about 80,000 miles on it was hit from behind while sitting at a stop light. Although the damage was only to sheet metal, and a easily straightened bend to the frame extension behind/under the rear bumper, the total cost of repair, painting, etc. was deemed to be 80% of the car's market value, hence, a "total".
Seeing as how I take great care of my 9-3 and planned to keep it for anothre 100,000+ miles, I chose to keep the car and have it repaired. As a result, the other driver's insurance "totaled" the car and then deducted the salvage price from my payout. I shopped around for a body shop with lower overhead who was able to bring in the repairs for even less than the money I was paid. So, I now drive my 9-3 with a salvaged title, but I know what shape it was in and is in now (still drives and tracks just fine). I took lots of pictures of the damage to document what the damage was, and what was repaired. So, if I ever do have to sell it, I can document to someone exactly why it has a "salvage title".
