Way OT: Attic insulation

So, I have determined that the attic insulation in my 1950's era Cape Cod is not up to par. I have the loose insulation in the attic, and batting on the kneewalls. I have been researching options, seems like I have two choices: 1) install another layer of batting across the joists on the floor and then a layer of house wrap (tyvek type) on the walls OR
Install rigid foam on the underside of the roof rafters with a 1" gap for airflow. This would mean that I would have a dead area in the attic though, between the rigid foam and the already in place insulation. Not sure if this is a good idea or not.
It seems that I need to define the pressure and thermal lines. I am leaning toward option 1, seems like less of a hassle.
any ideas or experiences??
thanks
Chris M
