...wouldn't the expense of that insulation be better put on the attic floor and adequate ventilation provided for the attic to keep it close the outside temp.? Seems to me it'd be doing more good keeping the living space warm (or cool, as the season requires) than isolating the roof.
Personally, in the case of unfinished attic space, I see it more as just shelter from the elements (rain, wind, snow, etc.) for the house and should be as open-air as practical. Adding layers to the roof might slow drying and encourage rot.
But that's just my gut feeling.
