...they removed the points penalty. Gong to fight a summons also means "lets make a deal."
"Your Honor, before we start this and take up about an hour of the court's time, I was wondering if you would accept a plea of either not guilty with a donation to charity or guilty to a lesser charge, half the value of the summons, and no points. If not, I believe I can win this case with the data I have collected. By accepting this arrangement, perhaps we can save the court time. I know I certainly also would like to put this behind me even if it costs me some money, but it is just that I know that I am in the right and as such it just bothers me to accept points on an issue where I believe I can mount a strong and logical defense."
The judge didn't accept this once, I took an hour of her time, and she found me guilty but reduced the sentence by one half and removed the points. The very next time she saw me, she elicited from me an agreement to pay 1/4 the fine for a dismissed charge, and with a wry look on her face she made an off the record comment that she would be able to go home on time.
You need to do your homework. You need to make them work for their money. You need to be creative. You need to be polite and have patience. You need to stick to your guns.
